Rising with the Sun

East Gallery is participating in the 2024 Taipei Art Week. The joint exhibition of galleries in the East District will be in the theme of “Rising with the Sun” from the east to illuminate all directions. A carefully curated selection of a diversity of classic works by famous artists in Taiwan's modern art history will be showcased.

Lesson 1 of the second volume of the Chinese Reader in early Taiwan goes: “If a person stands facing the rising sun, the front is east, the back is west, the right is south, and the left is north. East, west, south and north are the four directions.” Rising with the Sun Exhibition represents the east, south, west, and north of art. As long as the sun rises, it never sets in the country. The first exhibited work, “Sun, Clouds, and Sea” by the miner-turned-artist Hong Rui-Lin, represents the dawn, air, and water - the eternal sources of life.

The exhibition includes Chen Cheng-Po's Distant View of Mount Jade with Clear Clouds, Liao Chi-Chun Dawn at Guishan Island, Li Mei-Shu's Autumn Mountain in Sunlight, Chen Chin's Sunrise, Yang San-Lang's Park in the Morning, Li Shih-Chiao's Morning Light in Tamsui, Lan Yiding's Women Washing Clothes by the River on a Summer Day, and Shiy De-jin's Morning Glory. The latter depicts the sun's first rays on morning glories blooming towards the east, like the blossoms all over on Ministry of Culture's logo.
